The village of Wisemans Ferry, 50km northwest of Sydney, is named after former convict Solomon Wiseman who operated a punt over the Hawkesbury River. Today, two modern ferries represent the oldest continuously operating service in Australia.

Rising behind the Blue Mountains, the Hawkesbury is the largest river in NSW and is navigable by seagoing boats all the way to Windsor, a distance of over 100km. Bordered by several National Parks, the Hawkesbury represents a scenic and historic pathway through stunning sandstone scenery. In the 1880s, visiting novellist Anthony Trollop was reminded of Germany’s Rhine. Although he saw no Castles, he marvelled at sheer sandstone cliffs plunging hundreds of meters, straight into the river.

Today, Wiseman’s Ferry remains a central point to explore a scenic and historic region right on Sydney’s doorstep.
